A BRIEF HISTORY:

The Bite Me! Fishing Derby as it is known today, was started way back in nineteen hundred and ninety four, When Metchosin Volunteer Firefighter Richard W. Jones held a small fishing derby for his fellow firefighters. It was a great success, and opened the doors for consideration of a more in-depth venture a year later.
In 1995 Mr. Jones proposed to a handful of volunteer firefighters that a serious attempt could be made for a successful fundraising fishing derby, which would benefit many Sponsors, Participants, and most importantly for local salmon conservation, to ensure the future of the sport. The original sole beneficiary of the Bite Me Fishing Derby net proceeds was the Sooke Salmon Enhancement Society and was later transferred to the care and management of the Pacific Salmon Foundation in 2002.

Since it all started, **WE have had over 3,801 participants, 2,101 fish weighed in, totaling 35,626 lbs. 3 oz., raised over $526,855 worth in Prizes & Donations, and raised over $72,000 for Local Salmon Conservation & Charities!

(**WE means: all the Sponsors, Participants & all the Volunteers!)
